Platypus, makers of all things hydrating, is dipping its webbed feet into hydration packs. We took a look at their Sprinter XT 25.0 model and found it to be a sporty little racecar of a peak bagger, weighing in at a mere 2lb 5oz to boot. We've been using it as everything from a light overnight pack to a diaper bag, and it works flawlessly in any role we've pressed it into.
The 25 refers to 22 liters of storage space plus a 3 liter water tank. There is a main compartment with a dual-zipper opening that extends about half way down either side of the pack. That's far enough to get to whatever you might need, and the space is big enough for layers, food and sundries. There is a small interior zipped mesh pocket with a key keeper. Combined with the other storage options you could really use this for ultralight overnight trips easily.
There is a sunglass-sized zipped pocket on the front top, and right below that an open stuff-it pocket that will swallow a layer or a crampon bag. Rounding out the pocket situation are two quart-bottle-sized side elastic mesh pockets, and two compact-camera-sized hip belt pockets with zippers. Dual ice axe loops and various lashing loops provide more options than you'll ever need on a pack this size.
External seams are taped and zippers are water-resistant. Airflow is great through a deep channel between the pads on the back. The hip belt has plastic clips that redirect the pull so you can tighten by pulling forward, although they have a small gap and in our experience the strap usually pulls through. If you're going light, you can stow the waist belt although you can't remove it. Fixing the redirectors and making the hip belt removable would be nice changes for version 2.0.
The Biz Zip SL reservoir is excellent, as per usual for Platypus. Overall the Sprinter is a great little pack that punches way over its weight class, with plenty of gear organization options. It's great for when you need to be prepared for a wide range of conditions, and will excel at everything from mountain biking to randonee racing to overnight fastpacking to hike-and-climbs. Its versatility makes it an excellent value, especially at the current sale price.
